Thanks very much to Gene Hough and Lynn Thompson for presenting our program in May. It was a meeting that celebrated the 225th anniversary of the end of the Revolutionary War. Gene came dressed as a soldier from that era and spoke on the War in general and the Battle of Augusta. While Lynn, also in period dress, spoke on the events at the Living History Park in North Augusta. Lynn does a great, great job there. Please visit next time they have an event.

In May we had our annual ACHS board elections. John Burckhalter(vice-president), Bill Gassman, and Rooney Floyd will be the new board members and will serve a three year term. They replaced long-time members Sara Beeland, Jane Davis and Joan Locke. Thanks to each of them for their many years of dedicated service to the Aiken County Historical Society. They will be missed greatly

In May of 2007 we will be losing our current Treasurer, Secretary and one more board member. Also, we are in need of a reception hostess. This person would be in charge of set up and clean up(along with help from others) for the three general meeting each year. Please give me a call at 649–6050 if you think you might be interested.

Thanks to Glenn Parker, Director of the Aiken Parks and Recreation Department, and his staff for all of their assistance in preparing for the unveiling/dedication ceremony of the Aiken County Farmers’ Market historical marker. Thanks also to Coleen Reed, Market manager, for all of her help. Please see the photographs of the event in this issue.

Recently, the ACHS received three special $50 donations. Tim and Beth Bates’ donation was a memorial to former member Frieda Grifffin. Mac McClearen’s donation was a memorial to former member Jean Ebenhack. Mildred Barton made the donation to us because we repaired/repainted the historical marker in Montmorenci for the Pascalis Plantation. Thanks to all of them.

Another death has occurred in the ACHS family. Mrs. Willard Bond has just recently died. She and her husband never missed a meeting until their health worsened and they were unable to attend anymore.
But, Mr. Bond is still a faithful member.

Recently, photographs of three of our historical markers appeared in the local paper. The three were: the Graniteville Mill, Hitchcock Woods, and the Farmers’ Market.

The upcoming 15th Colonial Times: A Day to Remember will feature an official wedding ceremony that will be conducted as it was in the late 18th century. It will be on Saturday, October 21, 1:00 pm at the living History Park in North Augusta. Keep an eye on the local paper for more information.

Enclose in this journal is a 2007 membership formFor those who would, we ask that you pay you 2007 dues. We ask this so we can save o n postage by not having to send out so many notices in January. Thanks you for your help in this matter.

Please make your plans to be with us on Sunday, September 17, 3:00pm at the Aiken county Historical Museum. Wilkins Byrd will present a very interesting program on the old Sports Facilities in Aiken.
He has some great photographs and stories. A reception will follow the program.
